Overcoming Challenges to Location Efficient Housing Choices
Transportation costs consume approximately 30% of a low-income family’s monthly income in the Portland region. If these households could obtain location-efficient housing—housing near everyday destinations like school, daycare and work—they could reduce travel time and expenses.
Low-income families face significant barriers in choosing location-efficient housing, such as the high cost of close-in neighborhoods, landlords reluctant to rent to people using housing vouchers, and for some, problems with credit and rental histories.
Through this project, sponsored by the region's four public housing authorities, Metro and the Federal Transit Administration, we are developing and evaluating tools to help families using housing vouchers find and obtain location-efficient housing.
